Miami Children’s Initiative in partnership with the Miami Foundation’s My Miami Story hosted an evening of discussion and dinner on October 18 at 5:30 pm. The site of the dinner, between Charles R. Drew K-8 Center and the MCI community space, a gathering point for resources for children and their families. Many of the residents in attendance, were newly elected Resident Council officers of the Annie Coleman Apartment complex.
The event also hosted Miami-Dade Public Housing officials, MCI staff and Board members, executives of the Miami Foundation and many young and older adults who were interested in discussing their personal experiences of life in Miami and Liberty City, respectively.
Comments and discussions varied between voting, education, employment, volunteering, and concerns and issues of trust when engaging those outside of their community. Residents were excited and high-spirited about sharing their thoughts and feelings in this unique and uncommon platform.
